Pretty easy response. I can answer by a recent decision I made. I finally
found this gorgeous male who I thought would go great with my bitch. Then I
asked how he died and the response was that he died at age 9 from DM. My
bitch carries the DM factor. There was no way that I would do that breeding
knowing that 50% of the litter would die of DM. I had a dog die from DM
several years ago. It is horrible to put a dog down when they are mentally
all there, but physically gone. It is the least I can do for the memory of
this dog that we all loved so much.
We are breeders, not merely exhibitors. Breeders owe a duty to the breed.
If you just want to win, then it is my opinion that you should not
breed--rather you should just die. Having said all that, there is also a
reality today that there are so many problems in all of the lines. We can
only try to do our best.

Since I never am shy about posting, let me throw out something.
Year ago, when we had a couple of big winners, Jerry Graham asked me an
interesting question. It is one that calls for a personal answer for
everyone. I don't invite an answer, but only raise the question.
"If you could have a super-star for a few years, would you want that dog?"
I know we are all trying to better the breed, but the way we compete is to
try to win by making our dog closer to the standard, under the judge we
enter. So, if you had a dog that was that perfect animal, but died within
five years, would you regret having the dog for those years?
Even when a dog of mine lives to be 12 or 13, I am troubled that I bred
something that lasted such a short time. I miss them when they die, and do
think maybe I never should have created that animal.
I am not inviting anyone to give me an opinion. I am just suggesting that
we all consider the question.
