My husband had a cocker spaniel bloat. At the clinic we say various breeds
bloat. (a doxie, labs, chows to name a few) So I personally think it is just
something that is an unfortunate medical issue animals can encounter. Until
they prove there is scientific proof that it is genetic/hereditary I will
keep being cautious of all my animals regardless of lines. It is way too
easy for people to point fingers at a dog in a pedigree as being the cause
because it is a common dog in the pedigrees but there are also many other
dogs in the pedigree so how can you just sit there and say "Yep there is the
corporate". This train of thought drives me nuts. There has not been enough
proven facts out there to be able IMHO to make accusations like this. So
like I said until there is solid proof out there that it is brought on by
certain lines I will just do my best and use the experience of others who
have dealt with bloat/torsion and what I have seen when I worked in the
clinic and hope to keep my doggies safe.
Kathy that is the same point I have made many times too regarding horses.
There are so many other animals that bloat/torsion besides dogs. Although I
have never heard about a human thank you for that further information.

Remember , HORSES can bloat and torsion too, and too frequently. I lost my
best Paint mare
years ago to a torsion...she had a 3 mos old colt at her side. He
survived...but I still miss her.
It probably happens in more animals than we know. I even saw a little boy
(on Trauma Ctr TV show) that had a
gastric torsion as the result of a car accident. It was a seatbelt injury,
and he was bloated and painful, but with
no injuries readily apparent. He made it.
There are no exact causes, all we can do is try to be vigilant.
Unless by some miracle there is actually a genetic marker for it, we all
tend to hold our breath.
