No one on the West Coast, and probably in the country does not know the
answer to if Celeste is Alpah at Cherpa. But, she looks so good doing it.
I know Pat. And, he has told me.

Don't like to knock heads. My mother use to say "to each his own". Showing
dogs is a big commitment, time, money, etc. a key ingredient is passion.
I cannot give anyone passion to show in conformation, nor can obedience
enthusiasts let me borrow their passion for their interest. Alpha? You'll have
to ask Pat. I can't make that call.

Subject: Re: [ SHOWGSD-L ] The Toy Department
You are more tolerant than I am, Flower Boy. I dislike being told what to
do, when to to do it and how. We are ALL passionate about our dogs and
the different venues where we participate. I am interested in breed and
herding; do I think that everybody should jump on the herding bandwagon? NO.
And just because I choose not to comment or cross myself three times
doesn't mean I don't care about GSDs. Yes, the youngsters are the future;
perhaps they should experience the here and now, read and study pedigrees--the
complaining is getting old. WHY are entries declining? It is the way of
the world. People's interests are more diverse, many are unwilling to be
students of the breed, and many want instant gratification: If they don't
win immediately ( due to having an inferior dog, poor sportsmanship, e.g.
all) they go elsewhere. Showing dogs IS (and always has been) expensive.
It's been that way since I joined the game in the 70s.

To me dog activities and sports are the "toy" department of life, many who
are involved with either or both can be extremely passionate about their
personal involvement. Both share a special bond among the folks who
participate. Unfortunately because we are fallible creatures the passion can
be
disruptive at best and dysfunctional at worst. At the end of the day neither
activity will solve your problems, cure your ailments or bring world
peace! In the real life scheme of things it really doesn't matter if the
National is in St Louis or Maui. It doesn't matter whether the futurities grow
or
die. It doesn't matter whether the Raiders win the Super Bowl or not ( they
won't). If you woke up this morning in fairly good health, you have a roof
over your head, most of your bills are paid, there are two or three folks
in the world who care about you.... well you are way way ahead of the game!
The most profound statement ever made on the list in my opinion was made
by the Southern California gentleman lawyer... he said showing dogs is all
about people ( relationships) the dogs are how we keep score. Sarah has a
passion about this dog thing that may be different, we hear from her from
time to time and she always speaks her mind and most of the time it causes
different responses! Most of us here are old goats, Sarah and a few others
out there, Jeff Pyle etc are the future. If they decide to change this breed
and the sport so be it! Ed Hill
