[ SHOWGSD-L ] What do you think about this one?

I have one for you.

What do you think about a client who took their 5 1/2 month old puppy to the
vet to be neutered and the vet told the owner the right hip "subluxated"
when they turned him over on the table for the neuter and she declared him
dysplastic.

Then the owners vet took x-rays. And based on those x-rays said based the
left femoral head was flat. The x-rays were reportedly then sent to a
'Specialist" one Dr. Tierce of the Ft. Worth area.

The "Specialist" Dr. Tierce reportedly said (based on the x--rays and not a
physical examination) ""If the dogs hips are this lax now it is almost a
100% certainty that he will be dysplastic."

Then the owner sent the x-rays to a so-called "professional" a Board
Certified Radiologist in Dallas, who will evaluate them in the next few
days. All the while, the dog has NOT exhibited any discomfort and is being
trained as a search and recovery dog.

Naturally as the breeder we want the x-rays on a 5 1/2 month old puppy who
was NOT exhibiting any signs or discomfort whatsoever, to be evaluated not
only by our veterinarian, but Texas A&M University and OFA if necessary.

As the breeder what simply amazes me is the clients over-reaction - first it
was 5 1/2 month old puppy - then the right hip subluxating when he was
rolled over during surgery, then it was the left hip had a flat femoral
head, then it was 100% sure he would be in the future dysplastic... which is
it?

My question to the list is - what are your opinions on hip x-rays at 5 1/2
months on a dog not exhibiting any discomfort? And what would you tell these
people since the story has changed from right hip, to flat femoral head on
left to 100% probability of HD in the future?

Naturally we are awaiting receipt of the x-rays so we can have our vets
evaluate them (personally I can't wait to see them) and then send them onto
A&M and OFA if necessary.

Quite frankly I have never heard of a 5 1/2 month old pup being diagnosed
with HD in so many areas before and especially a dog that isn't exhibiting
any problems. Has anyone else?

Faithfully Yours,
Rin Tin Tin,
Miss Daphne Hereford.
