Hi Ed et al,
You are wise beyond your years. Only people after 60 are supposed to be
wise, with the exception of Dave, of course. As far as beauty is concerned I
would beg to differ with you, haha.

But kidding aside, what happened here at my house with this GS opened my
eyes to the need of show dogs or other kennel dogs to feel part of a family
that cares for them as they want to care for you. What happens once this
gorgeous dog has attained its championship, does it go back in the kennel or
is it paraded around once in a while at a dog show? I can hear Dawn's
frustration in every post she sends our way and I believe that some of these
dogs have never had interaction with their owners, otherwise they would not
be able to cast them away just like that. Get them out of the kennel, teach
them to behave, show them you love them, then Dawns work would be cut in
half, I am sure.

I have a litter of pups right now and they get all the love they need every
day. The hardest part is now ahead of me, trying to find the right people
for my pups who will love them as I do. I've been pretty lucky so far.

Lee....you are as wise as you are beautiful...I feel guilty and I only have
three dogs, they live in kennels, but all three have been inside, and Raider
sleeps inside when I am away...all three have been to my school and they are
all well behaved, I now don't believe any are show dogs, but when I get more
time all three of them will DO SOMETHING!...two have been herding and they
love it...this breed is more than an animal that lives in a kennel and
travels to a show once in a while, and I am not bad mouthing folks with lots
of kennel dogs, but to answer Lee's question...we are breeding to
WIN...admit it or not, that's what we are doing, and I include me in this
group as well....most GSDs bred by show breeders ARE NOT SHOW DOGS....what
happens to all those dogs?...when I stop showing and breeding and it won't
be long...it will NOT be a sad day....Ed Hill

Just recently I was entrusted with a show dog to keep for a little while. I
felt very honored over the faith people had in me to be in charge of such a
valuable dog.
First off, I must say that I do have several GS's, although show dogs they
have always been house dogs and only go into the kennel (only have one) in
case of an urgency.

So, here comes this dog, sees the big yard and takes off racing back and
forth. Well, I guess it needed to let go and have some fun. It became
serious when it had no intention to listen to me and proceeded to take my
yard apart bit by bit starting with the furniture pads, the garden hose, the
plants, sprinkler heads etc. It actually ran circles around me. You may
laugh, but it was not funny after a while. I finally caught it and put it
in the kennel from which it barked incessantly for the entire time it was
there (several hours).

My point is this: I can have a dog that can perform in the show ring but
also has manners in a family situation, get along with other dogs, come when
called and act decent. Why are we

allowing a dog to be strictly a kennel dog that is only to be taken out and
put on a leash when it's time to go into the show ring just to return to
the
kennel again on a leash. No wonder this dog goes nuts when there is too much
freedom. It cannot handle it. But is this really what we want? Isn't there
a
little more to a German Shepherd?

I have learned so much from my dogs by interaction and in a home situation.
They give you so much more in return than you give them. I would never want
to have just a kennel dog. What a waste!
