Read the standard, and you'll see that the things that make a Peke a Peke
are things that must be found with the hands...not just with the eyes. For
one thing, the tail is long enough to come up and lie on the back, which
adds to the image of "hairball," which is all most people see.
The gait must be "rolling," not too much reach or drive... you can see if
the dog rolls or not...and if it doesn't, if it moves like most dogs, that's
incorrect.
The dog is a rectangle, with rather bowed forelegs...certainly not
straight legged...they are heavier in front than behind, which, along with
the bowlegs, makes the dog roll... it's also very much a head breed, and
the description of the head is very important....if I tell you a dog has an
envelop head, you don't know what I mean until you look at a lot of Pekes.
They are not to be very obviously trimmed or sculpted..the coat is
the crowning glory of the dog (with the correct texture, of course) and the
overall shape of the dog must not be obscured by the coat.
It's a lovely breed, when you get to know it...I have a friend who
breeds Pekes and has judged them all over the world...there are usually 15
or so Pekes of various ages and colours running around her house at any
given time, and they are quite sweet.
I could never have one just because of the hair... but it's a nice
breed........ Read the standard, as I said, and you'll have an idea what to
look for next time you see one.
