I just want to add:
The REAL reason our Breed quality is so great is because we
have a great Standard...and we have devoted Breeders and Judges
who seriously adhere to it.

I have to agree with Cherpa. The dogs are better today than ever. When
we look over the Select class at the National, there are very few dogs we
would not love to own. The quality is so much better than 40 years ago,
and the temperament has improved to the point where it is no longer unusual
to find sound dogs over and over.
The breeders and exhibitors are even more dedicated than ever. The
membership is having a good time, and the entries at the shows are filled
with
quality, but perhaps not quantity.
We breed each litter to improve, and we are doing a great job.
If the membership of the club is smaller, (and it isn't that much), then it
is a group even more dedicated, hard working and committed enthusiasts
than ever before. We who show, who breed, who judge and who enter seem to
love the sport and our dogs. It does seem that some who have given up on
the
German shepherd want to tell us how foolish we are, how terrible the breed
it, and how we need to moan and bitch about the state of our breed.
If you hate the breed, if you can't stand what you see, if you think the
world is going to hell in a hand basket, move on. It is you who are
supporting the breed who make this sport fun, and only you can prevent
depression or derision in our breed. You can also prevent forest fires.
The future of our breed is sound. The board works hard to do the right
thing. The breeders are breeding the best they can, and those who show, know
that the competition is as hard or harder than ever.
If you don't agree, why stay? I am sorry you will leave, but I know I and
others will go on enjoying this breed, this sport, and this club. If
there are but three of us left, we will have fun, and enjoy our chosen
method of
entertainment.
