I recently came back from the International Brotherhood of Magician's
Convention. It was dedicated to my aunt June who was the first woman president
of the organization. World wide they have over 30,000 members. Magic has always
been a man's profession, but the woman are coming up. A good friend of mine,
Jade is a good example. You can see her at Jademagician.
My aunt in her usual sense of drama, at 104 decided to die four days before the
convention. They asked me to say something, (five minutes before they presented
a proclamation from the governor to June). I said, "I have practiced magic on
the stage for 72 years, and all anyone knows is that I am June's nephew". Then
I said, "That's good enough for me."
IBM has the same problems as the GSDCA. How do we get young people involved?
How do we interest new people? How do we support the activities? The
attendance was about 450 magicians.
At the magic contest I was asked to be one of the five judges. There was an act
with two young women from China that blew me away. They won it all, and I
congratulated them, but since no one spoke English, I don't guess it meant
anything. At the airport two of the acts from Korea wanted to take pictures
with me, but again, no one spoke English, so I never did know why. But, there
was a lot of bowing involved.
I am amazed that all clubs, be it dogs, magic, or the Boy Scouts, has the same
problems, and try to find a way to exist and still serve the membership.
Now, back to St. Louis, figuratively and literally.
