This thread has always interested me. I'm still fairly new to the show scene. Over here in Australia, we start showing our dogs as soon as they hit 3 months!! In fact, a few breeders have even been known to change birth dates so the pups are eligible for particular shows. They certainly are not faster maturing. Many are still deep bodied and bulkier when they mature. I can't stand the look of some of the dogs today, all legs...they look like salukis with different hair and ears, some of them. In a few other breeds, I know people started showing dogs seriously at a younger age because the dogs fell apart by the time they matured. So who was fooling who there? I seem to remember a time when it wasn't unusual to hear of so-and-so dying at 3 years of age, too...maybe people want to get those titles before the dogs croak, huh? This is a whole topic by itself, the campaigning of puppies and young, immature dogs. You should hear the excuses the toy dog people make..."oh, they lose their teeth by the time they are two" and all that crap. If the dog is good, he's going to be better at 4 or 5...what's the rush? In other countries (in all breeds) you can't claim the title of Champion until you win after a certain age...either a year or 18 months, whatever..........when AKC brought that up, it was beaten so badly it wasn't funny. So we have lots of puppy champions in all breeds, not just teenage champion GSDs...and then you never hear from those dogs again. Does this make sense to anybody?
