My take on some of this is that many newbies have no idea how much work it takes to have show dogs and be successful with them. It is hard work, whether you have 1 or 21. Not only is it a learning experience, it is doing as well. Peak conditioning is critical. I am forever after people to keep the weight off, exercise the dog, condition the coat daily, etc. You have to use your head and your heart. You cannot give up on a pup that gets gangly at 7 months and wish later that you had held on to that one. Where the breeder is most important is know how the puppies grow and when they will come into their own. Listen to the breeder. Very few handlers can tell you how the dog will grow, because they only see the dogs at their best---at the shows. My handler and I often do not agree on puppies, but I follow my own path. I mentor whomever I can and get really frustrated when the newbies lose focus after I have placed a top animal with them. I recently have one where the puppy stands a good chance at two "best puppy" wins, but they have company coming in within two weeks and need to stay home and do chores. (I don't know about the rest of you, but I know how to get chores done in the evening or around the dogs shows.) What I want to see is the person who just can't hardly make it until you say "dog show" and they become whirling dervishes to bath dogs, pack the van and are early to my place to get going. And finally, there are those who want to breed and show dogs and ask you to please help me find "XYZ". You find it and all of a sudden, they change their minds. If it were easy, everyone could do it---this is one thing you still have work at to make happen and you need to align yourself with people who DO IT to get where you want to go.
