Chris that is true to a large degree, that some people in other parts of
the world may take a dim of some of the US dogs.
This is just like many of our GSDCA members take a dim view of import line
dogs. Part of it is personal preference
and part of it it lack of knowledge, and part prejudice...this is a fact on
both sides of the pond. We know this.
Part of the issue with the "rest of the world," is that often all they
see our dogs doing is exhibiting a dramatic side gait, and
very little else. This is how we portray them, by and large. It's not
that they can't or don't do other things brilliantly well,
but it is the picture we put out there...so I can understand it.
It is no different than the mental image some of our members have of
European dog as short necked, roached backed,
and poor moving. It is not the truth, but it is what is often portrayed.
I think having the GSDCA incorporate Schutzhund or Working Dog Sport as
it is called, can only help change the opinions
of the rest of the world about our dogs , and our perceived involvement in
the breed. I think eliminating it from the GSDCA
would only reinforce the very stereotype we are trying to avoid with US
dogs, and the GSDCA.
Our dogs can do it all...and we should give the membership every
opportunity to showcase their dogs. We are not, after all
only a one dimensional club that only caters to AKC conformation. We like
our dogs, are multi-faceted, and should embrace that.
Schutzhund has been around since Capt. Max...it is part of what made this
breed so great. We should seek to uphold those ideals,
and provide those interested a way to do so.
