Carolyn's point is right on as far as the people in Northern
California showing at all breeds and specialties. I would say that 75%
of the dogs that show at the all breeds in Northern California also
show in the specialty rings. Of course, it depends on the judges, but
there are a lot of good all breed judges that know a good GSD. It is
those judges that we chose to build majors under. For example, my
Strider finished at an all breed weekend....judges were Charlotte
LaRosa ( 2nd major) and Joe LaRosa (final 2 pts). But his first major
was under an all breed judge. He went on to win many BISS and many
BOBs and Group 1s at all breeds. His progeny also have won at all
breeds and specialties. I don't think we should be so quick to
continue to promote this division among all breeds and specialties.
As others have said before.....there are good all breed judges and bad
all breed judges but there are good specialty judges and bad specialty
judges. It is the exhibitor's responsibility to know which are
which....for your dog. And exhibitors should make connections with
all breed clubs so they have input in judge selection. With entries
getting smaller and exhibitors getting fewer, we need to support each
venue and those who exhibit in both. I have advertised in both The
Review and Canine Chronicle for they each reach a difference audience.
