As for Venture's after care... I have LOTS of experience with debarking,
having had Shelties, LOL! We usually just fed softened food for 3 or 4 days
and kept the dog quiet for the same length of time. By quiet I mean no
barking. Yea right, LOL! Activity isn't the issue... keeping the dog from
barking for the first few days to a week helps to keep scar tissue from
forming.

I had a dog debarked today. My vet charged me a very reasonable $120. The
surgery took about 15 minutes from beginning to end, and within another 15
minutes, he was walking steadily back to the van, his tail wagging, and his
demeanor normal. He uses the anesthesia that is quickly reversed. The vet
said he
needed no special treatment, but I am crating him for a few days, because I
want him to be rested and quiet (for my guilt). When I put him outside, he
will
run and "bark" like a maniac. This entire area has been sold to developers,
and I am surrounded by homes, the newest ones currently being built around
10
feet from my kennel. (They will have a 10 ft back yard, like all the rest
on
my street. Of course they made new streets for these homes). It is two
story, ( they will be looking down on my dogs) and there will be 3 or four
more
lined up next to it. This entire area was previously agricultural, every
house
on acreage. In 35 years of raising dogs here, there has not been one
complaint. Last month I got a notice from animal control that there had
been a
barking complaint, and they had sent the complainer a petition to get
others to
sign. They said if the petition comes back to them, they will have to pay
me a
visit. I have been on these poor dogs day and night, and things are pretty
quiet, but not enough. We had to fold, ( me and the neighbor in back of me,
who
has three horses, a goat, etc,) and sell to developers ourselves. It will
take a year for it to close, (and 10 years to pack up or throw away all my
junk), so in that time, I have the unending stress of keeping these dogs
quiet,
when kids and dogs will be running and playing within feet of them. I am
writing this mostly to vent, LOL, and to emphasize how easy this surgery is
on the
dogs. Dyna came to me debarked, my God, she is a terrible barker, and I am
so
grateful Corrinne Burton had it done. The dogs that only bark for a reason
(that I can understand, no doubt they have their own reasons), will not be
debarked. Venture is resting next to me, we went potty, and he seems
totally
normal, with no exhibit of pain. Vet said he can eat normally, but I think
I
will soak his food a good long time. Syd
