living in Arizona I have had 2 males with Valley Fever(not at the same time)...I also traveled back and forth to Mexico for the meds.....One of the males was 8-9 months old when he got Valley Fever, either the valley fever or the meds left him sterile......Both dogs were on meds for 6 months....my other male had valley fever in his joints and his feet and legs were swollen, and both dogs had no appetite from the Valley Fever and were sort of nausious from the meds....aside from the valley fever meds they were put on pred. i sure would like to know a documented case that showed signes of recovery in a week What a mess....I hope never to have another dog with valley fever Judy judsohngsd@xxxxxxx ----- Original Message ----- From: <ELG440@xxxxxxx> To: <showgsd-l@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Wednesday, May 09, 2007 4:39 PM Subject: [ SHOWGSD-L ] : Valley Fever In a message dated 5/9/07 3:42:33 P.M. In fact, most dogs are acting normally, and have a very good quality of life after the first week or so of treatment with the medication. Antibody tests, also called serologies or titers, will be repeated periodically, and the results will determine the point at which the medication can be stopped. This is what Asgard's Big Ben of Encore had. The first few vets diagnosed cancer, due to it being in the leg joint, and wanted to amputate his leg. We finally got the correct diagnosis. The treatment was Fluconosol, which was $21.00 a pill, twice a day for the rest of his life. We were able to obtain it in Mexico for about $2.00 a pill. Within a month the growth was gone, and when we took him off the medication, it returned. So, we kept him on it for about six years. During that time he could not be bred as it corrupted his sperm. That is why he had so few litters. While on the medication, he had no problems, and lived a full life, if not limiting his love life. I was told Valley Fever could settle anywhere, and if it went to the heart or the brain, would be fatal. Ben had been to Arizona to show, and probably contracted it there. I guess we will never know what would have happened had he not had Valley Fever, and I guess there are new approaches to it now. I am pleased we did not amputate his leg as was first suggested. Instead we got to enjoy him for the nine or ten years we had him. I have had all the contact with Valley Fever I ever want to have. Thanks to my friends in Arizona, we did find out what it was, and how to treat it. They also suggested Mexico. $42.00 a day for nine years is a bit much for a pet, but I guess we would have done it.
