There are many illustrations out in cyberspace that refer to the hock joint as 
the hock and the metatarsals as the pastern.  The drawings and pictures appear 
to be "Germanic" in nature, but I don't know the origin of the illustrations.  
I, myself, have never heard anyone refer to the metatarsals as a rear pastern. 
Seeing how the FCI refers to the metatarsals as the hock, it's not a European 
vs. American thing.

Jackie, I'm not making light of anything, but I do believe, when it comes to 
this subject matter, we should "quibble over semantics."  If anything, just to 
avoid confusion.

I have never heard of the hock as a pastern.  And, the standard addresses the 
rear pastern and the hock.  It is very confusing, to say the least.

Is there a reason for making fun?  I know many people who refer to the hock as 
the rear pastern.

I think the important part is that the UKC standard is addressing a serious 
functional issue.
