In past years I have watched as people have "dumbed down" the definition of
the "Total Dog". The "Total Dog" is unmistakable in looks as a German
shepherd and an extreme moving dog that...as the Standard requests...covers
the maximum amount of ground with the minimum number of steps.

For some time now it has been the order of the day to down play
movement/sidegait. There are many who would consider a nice head, color,
coat, as
important as an animals ability (physically) to do the job it was bred for.
While
the entire Standard (The Total Dog) should be considered, there are
priorities. I believe sidegait to be a priority. I have no idea where some
see type,
style, or whatever you want to call it, as a problem. Movement, forequarter
and hindquarted, thats another story.

Of course if we dumb down on movement/sidegait, we may as well send pictures
in for judging.

Great post Paul,
