I think that is exactly what type is.
It is the collection of traits that make you say "That's a German Shepherd".

I have a different line of thought on type.
Type defines those things that make a particular breed different than other
breeds.Think about it if we call a dog or bitch typy it should be rich in those
characteristics that are demanded by the standard.
