My dogs track the way I train them to, GSD's are a very versatile breed
they can and do Schunzhud type tracking , they can and do AKC-CKC type
tracking and they do Search and rescue type tracking it is all in the way
they are trained. A RCMP dog does both CKC and SAR type what ever works
best to get the bad guy or the lost child, in the quickest way possible.
