I need to jump in here. At the Eukanuba show, it was mentioned that Dermot
had been pinched in the mouth by a judge during a mouth exam in a previous
show. He shied then. He now is quite "gun shy" about anyone coming near his
mouth. It was also hoped that it would be something he would "get over" and it
would not continue to occur. He is not a shy dog. Just around his mouth.
And, as was seen, he was his good ol' self the whole time. At that level of
competition, this could cost him plenty, no matter the reason. It is after
all, a DOG SHOW!
But hey folks! Blast me or not, but how many times are the GSD shying
away from the judge, excuses are made and overlooked. Yes, there ARE
definitely true shy/spook dogs, but Dermot isn't one of them. And, there
could be
legit reasons for it happening in ANY dog. To the outsider, they label a dog
a
spook or shy. At that level of competition, these dogs really better be
nothing short of sound! It's not the lights, crowds and noise. These dogs
are
used to it! And, if they are not, they have no real business being put to
that for a glorious reward. It only hurts them and the ones that show them. B
ecause THAT'S what people remember and most people don't care why! The
handler
gave him a second shot at this, because he really is a good dog!
Unfortunately, it was National TV. But, he was OK in the Group ring. But,
again, it is
a dog show and it's what the judges sees that day! The legitimate shy ones,
don't and can't really make it to that level. Ring trained or not! In ANY
breed of dog! Everybody has a bad day but, I wouldn't say that Dermot has a
temperament problem. But, his issue with his mouth can cost him plenty in the
wrong show.
