Our Louie passed away at the age of 5 from Toxic Gut. Here is a letter I
wrote to Louie's Breeder about what I found out about this terrible disease:
Hi,
Well, after weeks of looking into what happened to Louie and talking to some
very knowledgeable people, we do feel we have a real good understanding of
what happened, why it happened and how to "try" to prevent it from happening
from any of our "Louie" kids or any of our kids for that matter. Now, it is
for everyone to choice what they will feed and what supplements they will
use, but this is what we will be doing and the program we will be following.
First off, we blame NO one for Louie's death. It is something that happened
and if we had known what we know now, maybe, just maybe Louie would still be
with us. But we did not know that there was a predisposition to Toxic Gut
in his pedigree, we did not understand all the factors that go into setting
up the gut for this dreadful disease to take hold of our Louie and lastly to
recognize that when he got sick, that it was possibly Toxic Gut and what we
could do to try to save him. All we had ever known of Toxic Gut was that it
could happen to your dog at the vets office and you would not be able to
save him. That was our limited knowledge of this dreaded disease. And to
some extend that is true. I have consulted with our vets, Linda Arndt (the
Great Dane lady, a canine Nutrition consultant) and Dr. Krueger.
There are 3 very important factors that lead to Louie's death. His
predisposition in his pedigree to Toxic Gut, the lower quality food he was
on and the absence of probiotics. The root of the problem we feel was the
lower quality food he was on. Tim feds Purina Dog Chow (please, we do not
blame Tim, this is what he feeds and he thinks his dogs do fine on it. AND
we could have demanded that he feed something else.) These lower quality
foods lend to the accumulation of large amounts of debris in the intestinal
lining, and thus a GREAT place to grow bacteria. Now, throw in a move,
different food, and it sets up the immune system to fail to the degree that
the intestinal bacteria will grow even more rapidly. We had started to
introduce Louie to a good quality food after his first week with us and had
started the probiotics as soon as we got him. What I didn't know, was I
should have doubled or even tripled the amount that I was giving him, due to
the poor quality diet he was on and the stress of the move. That may in
itself have saved our Louie. It's kind of like sending in the "good" army
to fight off the bad guys that was growing like crazy. Not enough good guys
and the bad guys win. This time they did.
Now, in Louie's pedigree, we have found out that Dakota died of TGS as did
his sire Raider. Dakota's brother Dragonslayer also died of TGS. Dr.
Krueger said all the dogs he lost from Toxic Gut were Raider and Dakota
kids.
This is what we are going to do to try and prevent this from happening to
any of our kids again. Since nutrition and the use of Probiotics and
digestive enzmes are so important in keeping the gut in balance, (thus
preventing the bad bacteria to take hold again and cause bloat or TGS), this
is what we are doing. Now every component to this feed program has an
important job to do, and is an integral part of keeping the dog healthy. To
use only part of this program defeats the concept of wholeness and better
health for the dog. This program was designed by the Great Dane lady to
give our dogs a "fighting" chance. Her wealth of knowlege is incrediable.
I am giving you her explanations of why we are using these components. She
of course can say it so much better then I!!! There are 4 components to
this program. First we are feeding a quality Kibble. That as seen with
Louie, is very important.

Eagle Natural 23% protein 12%fat - weaning, all ages puppies and through
adulthood

2. If you feed a commercial Kibble, our dog's diet is absent of one
critical nutrient that you must put back into the diet on a daily basis.
Dietary enzymes are killed during the cooking and processing of Kibble.
This critical nutrient is missing from all commercial diets and the absence
of this dietary enzyme has long term effects on the body resulting in skin
problems (allergies), seizures, orthopedic problems and suppressed immune

So the "prevention" program we decided on was a good quality food, Nzymes,
BakPak Plus, and Oxi-drops. When you dog is traveling or under stress,
double your nzymes and probiotics. What may have also saved Louie that
night was the Oxy-drops. We had them, but did not know of their usefulness
at that time. When we ordered our Nzymes we got the Oxy-drops free. They
were sitting on my micro wave. I had no idea that they might have helped
him. We could have administered the Oxy-drops rectally and maybe, it could

Maybe with some luck you may be able to save the dog.
But we are all hoping that with using a good quality food, using the
probiotics RELIGIOUSLY (and doubling during periods of stress), using the
Nzymes and the Oxy-drops, we will never see TGS again. But in case, we
will have lots of Met. tablets and liquid handy.
