Yes, that is the exact situation I am referring to. could you imagine a simple
blood test to document where the dog is relative to normal as well as other
canines. This would be very simple and cheap.

<<It is knowledge such as this that is extremely beneficial to the breed and
breeders. The more information that we can get out the better. I would caution
folks and remind them there is not a genetic test linking gastrol intestinal
issues to heredity as of yet. For me, I'm leaning towards a relationship with
dehydration in the GSD and GI issues(doc Zoe's post is one of many simmilar
situations) I feel the blood supply to the to the GI system is/can be impaired
by this condition.>>
When we lost Bubba in 2007 the reason was unknown. After describing his
symptoms to the list, his breeder and several other GSD people Toxic Gut was
one thing that kept leaping out as a possible reason. One thing I either read
at http://www.videxgsd.com/gastrointestinal.htm (towards bottom of page) is
that in general shepherd have a packed cell volume count (not sure if that's
the exact term but it's the number of red blodd cells/mL of blood) that runs on
the high end of normal and dehydration makes this number go even higher. Once
the number gets to a certain level blood circulation gets compromised, the gut
slows down and bacteria takes off like wildfire causing the toxic gut.

Not sure if this was mentioned in Doc Zoe's links but wanted to make sure it
was put out there also.
