I would I have seen of Harley, I believe he is a wonderful GSD with great
temperament,
correct conformation with great movement.

I watch the GSD Nationals by video feed, along with all the breed shows on TV
but
it is not the same as being there.  Watching videos in YouTube of GSD
Speciality
shows also gives you ideas of the good and bad GSD's out there.

When I attend the All-Breed Shows in MI and IN I do see several GSD's with
serious conformation faults, their movement is totally incorrect and their
temperament undesirable,  I also see this at GSD Speciality shows too.  Since
anyone can show their GSD's at these shows and the good GSD owners and breeders
choose the shows they attend they are not always there.  So the big picture is
the GSD gets a bad rap with ill-tempered unstable dogs, with poor conformation
and movement. If only the top GSD's in several states as they did years ago
would attend these shows it could make all the difference in the world for the
GSD breed. People would be educated not to buy just any GSD from someone that
never health tests their good dogs or promotes them.

I do not travel as I use to, I use to attend horse shows Eastern National in
MA to Grand National in OK.  I guess I should have taken in Dog Shows at the
time but was way
to involved with horses. The GSD Speciality Show I attended years ago though
did
have lots more dogs than they do today.  I do understand this though since
cost of
gas, showing and traveling is much more costly today.

A dog that went Select Excellent in 2011 was excused for temperament at the
2009 and 2010 Nationals.  He is very well trained now, yet his owner/handler
will not subject him to the test to get a TC.  He recently fooled a judge I
have always respected for his/her stand on, and eye for, temperament. Very sad,
and I am, yet again, disillusioned.  His training (or meds?) now make him a
tail-wagging, kissy-face!  GSD's are NOT supposed to be Golden Retrievers,
even though we have cheapened the OFA CHIC to be more competitive with Goldens,
please don't change our Standard, too!   Aloof and approachable are
wonderful attributes in the breed.  JMHO

I will say, my observation only, that breeders seem to have come a long way
with temperament since the 70's.   Harley and his granddam, CH Diana, are
the first GSD's I have owned that are NOT gun-shy.  Why aren't breeders more
proud of that achievement?

BTW, I do love Capi, but, Harley had kids hanging all over him, too.  Taking
many pictures, feeding him all kinds of garbage. There were good temperamented
dogs both at Westminster and at Eukanuba.  Made me proud of our breed.

But, there are still some very serious health and temperament problems, over
all.  Sadly, I see these temperament problems more at Specialty Shows and at
our National than at All-Breeds.

Is it not true though there are ways to prepare for the temperament tests ahead
of time? If a GSD does not become rattled by anything or anyone would that
not prove their temperament?

I read and heard that years agowhen MaxvonStephanitz
judged conformation classes that he would have someone shoot a gun off and the
dogs that reacted in fear would be excused. That could not be done today but
loud noises do show whether a dog is of sound temperament. How many GSD's
today are afraid
of thunder? How many put their tails between there legs when someone
approaches them or backs awaywhen beingjudged? You do not need a
temperament
test to prove these GSD's are not of stable temperament.

As Capi proved to everyone when he was shown at the Westmister Dog Show this
year that he was a good temperament GSD accepting children or anyone that
approached him. Got along with others in the ring be it a person or dog, the
yelling of everyone in the crowd did not faze him that is a good dog to be
proud of.
