There are a number of dogs who have been influential in
our breed, and some have been pivotal in the shaping of
today's dogs. But even more important, it seems to me,
is the kennels who have paid the price to breed those
influential dogs. I am not one of those. I do not have
the time, the money or the inclination to breed the
many dogs necessary to establish the kind of influence
that shapes the breed with a line of dogs that produces
those individual breeding stars. My hats off to those
who do.
Some of us get lucky and breed a champion or three but
there are those who consistently produce champions,
GV's and GVX's. Some do it with a volume approach -
produce enough dogs and you are bound to get something.
Others accomplish the task with a limited breeding
program. Both require the mental and artistic ability
to understand what they are doing and to track a
straight line toward success.
For some, it is a happenstance - a one shot gift from
the gene gods. For others it is a consistent winning
program, year after year, breeding after breeding. This
is, in my opinion, the greatest influence to the breed.
Maybe, in addition to the top 10 dogs that influenced
our breed, would be the question: What are the top 10
kennels that have influenced out breed? Some are
history and I contend that some are with us right now.

I think this question can best be answered with what
has been the "greatest influence" in our own breeding
program. After all, that is what
affects each of us the most and that is often the
window we see through.
Most of the dogs you mentioned never had any influence
on us at all. Often we hear of a much used stud dog
that is popular because he
produces something really nice early on in his stud
career....then many breeders rush to use that stud.
At the same time....you also hear
many breeders that are purposely staying away from that
particular stud or line for whatever reason.
Obviously some studs become super popular and for that
reason are in many pedigrees.....often many times.
Many breeders are
thrilled to see them in the pedigree......and many make
every effort to avoid the dog or the line for whatever
reason. Breeders do what
they think is best with the information they have or
the lines they are utilizing....and very often have
varying opinions on what the Breed
needs. Many different things influence these
decisions and opinions.
When we first had our BOSS at stud ( GV Mar Haven's
Color Guard )......one of his first litters produced a
missing tooth ( a premolar ) in
the pick bitch. It was a line known for its share of
missing teeth......and I was not happy and neither was
the bitch owner...but that pick
bitch was really nice, and finished fast and easy.
After that...on inquiries for him at stud I was honest
and told them he had already
produced a litter with a missing tooth.
TO THIS DAY.....I still hear that "BOSS produced
missing teeth!" <G> Honesty does not always pay off
I guess....because after that I only
know of two more progeny with missing teeth from him (
with over 40 Champions ) ....and both were from that
same line on the bitch side.

So some studs get a 'reputation' for great..... and
for bad.......depending on the person expressing their
opinion.

That is difficult. I think you have to define the
"greatest most influential" before that can be
answered.
Clearly Lance was the foundation, or if you want to go
back, the "F" litter of Arbywood.
Then you have to think about Flag,or one of the other
males who dominated breeding for years.
When I know what the terms mean, I will give you my
opinion.
Hell, I might put in Dakota and Ben since they produced
so many champions. Then there is the Ben son,
Mephisto. And, more importantly, Tedi bred them.
