I find this to be one of the biggest problems in the breed today. I believe
it started about ten years ago when we noticed what we assumed were fixed
tails.
Then we realized the tails were not fixed, but were not active either. Then
we noticed a number of hocks that did not follow through. The incidence of
these two problems seemed to be in a direct proportion to DM in the dogs when
they got older.
It is my opinion, (backed with almost nothing) that this is all related. It
seems to me we have bred into lines with a spinal problem, that has now
manifested itself in these three symptoms; a dead tail in a young dog, locked
hocks and dragging toes as the dog gets older, and DM in the mature animal.
While most of my opinions have absolutely no merit, this one might be my
first thought with some value.
Not that there is anything wrong with that.
