I have to say the German Shepherd Dog fanciers are far far kinder than if such
a thing took place in the Equestrian world. Horses definitely have the bigger
canines.

Subject: [ SHOWGSD-L ] To speak or not to speak
It appears that we do not all agree on the whether to
respond to ignorance or not. One thought is that by
speaking in response to ignorance we give it traction
and attention and thus fulfill its purpose anyway. The
other side seems to feel that to not speak allows
ignorance to prevail.
I often do not know what I think about this, but there
are some rules I provide for myself that I thought I
would share.
1. When the ignorant are after attention, do not
provide a forum for them. That is I think our news
media covers things that are absolutely without value
or significance and thus give them significance. Best
thing to do for a riot is to ignore it.
2. When there is error being advanced by a person who
claims to be an expert, we do the general public no
favor by allow it to go unchallenged. Learning that the
earth is really round is a good thing. We learn that
because someone confronted ignorance and told the
truth.
Yet, these two thing overlap at times and it is
difficult whether to confront error or to reduce
notice. You cannot always do both. In the case of the
young omniscient expert in the magazine, she already
has received her 15 minutes of fame but has used it to
perpetuate error. Personal opinion: We do not want to
perpetuate her fame but we do want to defend our breed
and speak the truth.
Both approaches have value. The best may be that we
promote our breed and speak of our progress and of the
great dogs of today without getting personal. It is
there that we give attention to the person and not to
the issue.
