Knowledge never hurts. I am a sponge when it comes not only to GSDs but any
breed of dog. Balance, symmetry, movement, coordination, power, beauty... I
hope I can appreciate and do it justice no matter what wrapper it comes in.
I love learning, period. There's so much to gain appreciating how other
breeds plan breedings, pick puppies, evaluate youngsters and future breeding
stock. I love working with various performance people, understanding doggy
psychology, learning different techniques, realizing that not all things work
for
all dogs.
There are all 'rounders who are NOT GSD specialists whose opinions I
treasure and some who are "specialists" I just won't show to.
I remember once, showing a little puppy gal (whose sister Bart was showing)
to Bart. It was between dogs and bitches at a specialty and I said, I have
"so-and-so" here, want to see her? He said "Yes", I brought her over to the
set up, he turned to look and as I took a few steps in the direction of a
grassy area (I was going to take her off the asphalt onto the grass and let him
see her move), said, "No need, he said, I've seen enough", (and, yes, she
finished quickly). My point is, although it's fun to see, you don't need a
football field to appreciate and recognize and FIND a good one. A real dog
person doesn't, anyway. All it takes is a few steps:)
And...you can find real dog people in BOTH venues.
