I did that as a teen with our McNab, didn't have tick collars then.   BUT, 
I've since read/heard that pulling them off that way can separate the head from 
the body and create problems.   I haven't had ticks now, ever, on my dogs.   
Nor fleas.   They don't like the high desert, I guess.
