My repro vet, a breeder of various breeds, has breeders give Thryoid medication
if the test fails below a certain number. While that number is still a NORMAL
thyroid and would receive an OFA Certification, it is not high enough, in her
opinion, to conceive and maintain a pregnancy. This is regardless of the breed
of dog.
I can honestly say that when one of my bitches failed to conceive the first
time I bred her, even though progesterone testing was done and "ties" were
accomplished by a proven stud, she had me have her thyroid checked. It was
lower than she likes to see so she had my put her on thyroid medication. She
has since had pups.
BTW - her Thyroid test would have qualified for an OFA number.
I recommend that any bitch who fails to conceive get a thyroid test done. If
that is normal, I would suggest confirming pregnancy by ultrasound and then
running a weekly progesterone test to see if her progesterone level needs
supplementing in order to maintain the pregnancy.

I can only respond to the behavior and allergy issues. I witnessed an
ussie (15 yrs old) viciously attack its owner. The dog went for her face,
nd it was pretty scary. The owner said this had happened several times in
he past couple of weeks and that she was getting the thyroid checked. I
hought to myself that no dog of mine would be coming home from the vet if
e had even one such episode, but I kept my mouth shut. Not my dog or my
usiness. Sure enough, there was a thyroid problem. The dog was treated,
nd the behavior stopped. More than a year later, there have been no
ehavior issues.
With regard to allergies, I don't know. One of my girls tested normal for
hyroid (other two have not been tested yet), and she is itchy and has food
llergies to wheat and corn. She missed on her last breeding. When in
oat, though, she has a gorgeous coat. Maybe I will have the thyroid
hecked again before the next breeding. Thanks for the post,
