One problem is people who ship or take their bitch to be bred BEFORE she ovulates. The bitch stalls because she is in a new place, nervous, excited, whatever, but she stalls and doesn';t get to 5, or takes a month to get to 5. I never take in a bitch before she reaches 5. Even bitches who have been to your place before can stall. It is not uncommon for them to hold out until day 28 or 30 of the cycle until they reach 5. Normally once they get to 3.5. they will not slide back nto the 2's....they spike p to the normal progesterone numbers......but many many bitches never get past he 2's...therefore t is pointless to breed them. They do not ovulate until the progesterone is t 5 or 5.5.ng. t is not worth it to have a bitch or a stud for breeding that needs help just o breed. Basic breeding 101........bitches that have strong normal seasons, breed easy, help easy and ake great care of their pups and don't produce a bucket full of problems. arolyn marhaven@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx ww.Marhaven.com From: Ruth Scheubler aybe if we were to only breed bitches/dogs who can breed without medical help, onceive readily, eliver naturally and not move mountains to save each pup, we would have a more eproductively ealthy breed. I know we can do lots of stuff to get them pregnant, keep them regnant, keep them iving - but are we really helping in the long run? uth ________________________________ rom: "Pinehillgsds@xxxxxxx" <Pinehillgsds@xxxxxxx> ubject: [ SHOWGSD-L ] Re: Thyroids....the silent culprit I agree. I have had several bitches over the years that we had difficulty etting/keeping pregnant nd the culprit was that their progesterone levels didn't stay high enough to aintain the pregnancy. In each case the bitch was over 5+ years. I learned you can test and then upplement rogesterone, but then discovered, with the one line, the sisters were having he same issues so ever bothered. I've heard from my repro guy that GSDs are 'tougher" than other breeds too, but he reason he says s that many seem to hang around 2.5 (progesterone). Some owners/vets will get o 2.5, add 3 or 4 ays (natural breeding) and then breed and never do any follow up tests. I've had plenty of bitches go o 2.3, 2.5, back down to 2.1 and hang there, so you can see why what works with most other dogs oesn't always work w/ GSDs. Moral...keep testing until you get a 5... Had one gal who wanted her bitch bred, had testing on a Monday, her vet 'felt" er bitch would be eady Friday and I'm like "what is he, Kreskin????". I mean seriously....and he owners need to educate themselves!!!!!! No excuse w/ a library of info at our fingertips... She also told me from her experience (and she has a uge all breed lientele for reproduction services) GSDs have more problems conceiving than ny other breed he sees. I know one bitch that Strider was bred to started out with 7 pups. hen the bitch eemed to stop growing, the owner had an ultrasound done and the vet could ee that four were eing reabsorbed and three were remaining. She gave birth to one dead puppy, wo live puppies and the one died a few days later leaving one huge healthy puppy! Two other riends had their itches reabsorb puppies recently...one was a GSD one was not. Not good ews. When I first started in GSDs in the 80's the average size for a litter was 10 with lots f 13. I sure don't see that very much anymore. ay Springer ww.showboatgsd.com On Jul 2, 2011, at 9:30 PM, InquestGSD@xxxxxxx wrote: I had the most interesting conversation today with a dog person.
