Earlier today I wrote Carmen, told him there had been some talk about the
Loose Lead Temperament Evaluation and asked him to comment. The following
email
is from Carmen to the GSDCA Board and he also asked me to send it to the List
so here it is:

Since the national, I have received many calls and emails about the
temperament test used by the judges at the national. Apparently not
everyone was in agreement. A few have even blamed me for some of the judges
that are being written up at the all-breed shows because they are not using
the GSDCA "in-ring temperament test." We should be proud that we are
leading the way in making an attempt to improve temperament. It wouldn't
hurt for the Board to remind the membership what the test is, how it is
supposed to conducted and the goal of the temperament committee. New
members were not around when the test was developed.

Here is one of my responses to a member who learned that I was responsible
for what is happening in the rings all over the country.

"Several years ago the GSDCA board acted on the recommendation of the
Temperament committee (Chair Mr. Bob Penny). He recommended that a video
tape be developed so that all judges could see how to do an "In ring
temperament test." The GSDCA Board worked on his suggestion and had the
tape produced.

The standard says the GSD should be approachable by a stranger. That is
what the tape shows. When the tape was completed the GSDCA board asked the
AKC to have it added to the AKC official breed video tape. It was added and
AKC Reps are asking judges to do what the GSDCA board recommended.

There are however judges who do not follow the Temperament Committee or the
GSDCA's recommendation which is shown on the tape. The tape shows how to
approach the dog and what is expected. The tape and the breed standard do
not say that the dog should be touched or handled. Yet, there are judges
who insist on there own add-on temperament exercises. Some even attempt to
hold the dogs head and look into its eyes. Others insist on taking the
lead from the handler. For a breed that is aloof, it amazes me that judges
who are strangers, to the dog insist on doing these kind of things.

For the good of the order, I am asking that the Board pass on to the well
intentioned but misinformed what the test is all about. If you know of
any on the list that believe that I am to blame for what dogs and judges do
at shows ask them to call me. 770 9983679.

Thanks
