While we gather with family and friends to enjoy the feasts of the season, please lets not forget those who sit waiting for their special guardian angel to see beyond the dirt and fleas; someone to whisk them away to the warmth of the hearth and a full meal. They dont ask for much....just a few moments of our time and a kind word. If you have a vacant kennel, a spare corner, an empty crate....consider filling it this holiday season with a forgotten GSD....perhaps an abandoned and confused senior, anxious to just live out his days in the sunshine...or a frightened puppy, left behind by an uncaring owner. There are so many....if anyone is interested, I have a list. I did not include dogs already in rescue, as their fates are not precarious. I have over 40 GSD's in facilities across the U.S. who may not be with us by Christmas...some who may already have crossed... If you cant physically take another dog (and many of us truly cannot due to financial constraints, or physical limitations), consider donating for food or veterinary care. A few dollars buys a months worth of heartworm; 68$ fully sponsors a dog in many of these shelters, paying for spay/neuter and all shots. This makes the dog more adoptable. Consider checking with your local GSD rescue group and see if someone there could use some financial help with a dog they are fostering.. Things we can commit to in 2007??? Ask your local breed club if they would be interested in sponsoring a Rescue Fair in your area in spring 07. Include the GSD rescues in the area and ask OTHER breed specific rescues to participate. Have a bake sale at your breed club matches and earmark the money for rescue...put together a basket of goodies and have a raffle for rescue...there is SO much we can be doing! I will leave you with a happy story... A rescue worker, while visitng a shelter in Celina Ohio, took a picture of a sweet brown hound mix who was slated for the gas chamber the next morning. She titled the photo "Sweet Goodbye" and posted it on the net. Within 24 hours she had donations and even an offer of transport for this dog to NH.! Kevlar (her NEW name) was fostered in NH and proved to be a great gal. A person came to meet her, bringing her 4 year old Autistic child. The dog and the child bonded INSTANTLY....the rest is now history. From a kill shelter in Ohio to being a therapy dog for a challenged child.....Kevlar is finally home. There IS hope...we CAN make a difference....one dog at a time. Wishing all the listers the joys of the season, peace and harmony in your lives and all your dreams come true....they did for Kevlar.
