I think we've strayed a long way from the reason most people object.
All it takes to think about why this man is not welcome to so many of us
is to think about why we are involved in purebred dogs at all, and why
we chose to belong to a specific breed club.
If all we wanted was to love dogs, we could get rescue Shepherds
from any dog pound anywhere...as Dawn is fond of reminding us on a daily
basis (and well she should). If we only wanted to belong to a club,
there are other clubs: for magicians, for cooks, for dieters, for horse
fanciers, whatever. We belong to a club that is ostensibly in existence
to promote and protect the breed we are all interested in. Get that?
Promote and protect...if you prefer, say preserve and protect.
No, not everyone in the club breeds German Shepherds. Not everyone
shows them. Some that do show show in performance rather than in
conformation.
Some members prefer German style to American...some mix the two. There
are probably even people in the club who don't own a German Shepherd
right at the moment.
However, I doubt very much, no matter how many litters anyone in the
club breeds, that anyone else is wholesaling puppies...certainly not
gathering up puppies that are carelessly bred, bred with only dollar
signs in mind, and then loading them into trucks and shipping them all
over the country to be resold. Maybe not all the puppies the wholesaler
is dealing with are German Shepherd puppies, but some are...and even if
there were none, if we are at all interested in promoting, preserving,
and protecting the breed, or the "sport" of dogs that we enjoy because
of them, we must be against the wholesaler. This means not allowing the
wholesaler into our midst, just as we wouldn't knowingly allow the Amish
puppyfarmers that live and flourish in Ohio and Pennsylvania into the
club...because we don't want them or their ideas that dogs are just a
commodity.
When the AKC was promoting "commercial breeders" (that was AKC's
euphimism for puppymill) because only that way could there be enough
puppies to meet the demand of the public, most people saw through that.
It was obvious that that move to endorse and embrace commercial breeders
was done with money in mind... not the welfare of dogs at all. Believe
me, if John Q. Public wants a purebred dog, he can find one without a
commercial breeder. Oh yeah, he might have to wait a while...and we've
seen what happens when he won't wait...Ric Santorum is a prime example
of that.
There is no time, I repeat, NO TIME, when a commercial breeder or
wholesaler should be acceptable to any serious dog fancier...German
Shepherd or Chinese Crested or Dachshund...the breed doesn't matter.
It is NOT a question of whether we want to be exclusive, or
inclusive...it is a question of whether we knowingly want to associate
ourselves with someone who stands for everything that a club existing
for the betterment of a breed should be against.
