That would have been the Kish's dog 2005 GV CH Wayside's Honky Tonk Man.
Also I believe Bono went 2nd or 3rd at the 2003 National before becoming
the 2004 GV.
Just shows that the best dogs generally rise to the front of the line.
Ernie's show was an exception. Still some great dogs there went to the front
of the line.

This was an excellent definition as to why we do not require conformation
champions to get an obedience degree, or a working title in order to go
Grand Victor.
I found a resonant chord with this post. I have always felt our Grand
Victor was an excellent dog, with a perfect day, and the right judge. It
sort of
all has to come together for it to work. Every year I see three and often
four dogs that would have gone GV, had it been another day or another
judge.
One year I told Dick Jennings, who works with me, that Ernie Loeb was
judging the next Special class at the National. Without a moments delay he
said: "The last time Ernie judged, in his first cut were the next three
Grand
Victors." I had to check the records, but he was right. I do understand
they were either too young, or it was not their day. For the next three
years, it all came together for each of them.
It seems that it is seldom that the second or third dog wins the GV the
next year. I haven't checked, but maybe someone with a better mind than
me,
(which is just about everyone), can address that.
It sort of is the perfect storm of events to win the HV or the GV trophy.
But, it does keep us all trying, doesn't it?
