I thought so too! So I had to go look & read... according to the NIH drug
info, use in pregnancy has NOT even yet been evaluated! According to every
other bit I could find, Baytril is contraindicated for use in pregnancy... And
(the FDA and even Bayer says) studies have found Baytril to cause cartilage
damage in small & medium breeds of dogs while growing; though it has NOT BEEN
EVALUATED for large/giant breeds, its use is contraindicated for large/giant
breeds until adulthood as well due to the known research on the smaller breeds.
I should think it to have *worse* an effect on our bigger breed dogs in that
case!
Bayer touts that Baytril "penetrates all tissues and bodily fluids"....
So-- if cartilage is damaged even in little breeds during growth- what would
make it safe for during the cartilage DEVELOPMENT (if that were the only risk)
in utero? Baytril can also cause retinal damage- wonder what would happen to
the developing retina? (Remembering that the eyes form in early pregnancy as
well)
I wouldn't give Baytril to one of my pregnant bitches- besides, there are many
more antibiotics (even from within the synthetic quinolones group) that are
considered somewhat safer for the pregnant bitch if need be used due to
systemic infection. For those who feel the need to use prophylactic antibiotics
in the pregnant bitch, there are way safer ones to use IMHO. (Like amoxicillin
or cephalexin, or even sulfas like SMZ-TMP which is also broad-spectrum)
