Went to a breeding symposium about two weeks ago hosted by the UC Davis
Veterinary School of Medicine The best 65 bucks I ever spent without a woman
involved lol. All 5 speakers were Vets who specialized in Canine Reproduction.
Unlike many of you I was just blown away with all the things I didn't know.
sometimes "old school" is "dumb school". One vet who breeds and shows Nova
Scotia something or other stated that from a purely scientific medical point of
view a healthy bitch's reproduction system is better being bred 3 times in a
row than being bred once a year She acknowledged over population and all that
good stuff but her point was young healthy bitches stay healthier being breed
young and often. It caused a very lively discussion. FB

Another thought; I remember, back in the old days, if a male WOULD NOT BREED a
bitch that was a sign we didn't like and considered it a warning. We wanted
and in many cases insisted on males exhibiting strong libido; breeding a bitch
eagerly was very important and essential for the wellbeing of the breed.
Likewise we considered it important to have bitches that "stood, & flagged"
for the male,
conceived large litters easily, and whelped easily for the most part. I wonder
how many of our frequently used males are almost always collected. I
understand, it is s sometimes very necessary due to distances etc. however, I
hope when a male CAN be used naturally this will be the preferred method.
Thoroughbreds Stallions are never collected, the industry wants to ensure the
will and desire for breeding are kept potent. It is a basic drive, &
genetically, that same drive for breeding is connected to other desirable
characteristics found in the character and temperament
of the species.

I was always old school also. Natural breedings..never did ultra sounds to
find out if they were pregnant nor exrays right before whelping to find out how
many.. Never felt i want to expose or stress my bitches to the vets office
before whelping. Always had big litters
Now have a breed that is ai'd . Don't like the idea bit if i want a litter
won't have much choice? Times have changed
