We once had a wounded falcon that my son discovered in the creek near the house. He brought the falcon home wearing a thick leather glove to protect his hand and arm. We took the falcon, in one of the dog crates, to the vet who also happened to care for some of the St. Louis zoo birds. The falcon had a broken wing which the vet put a splint on. My son made small round balls of raw hamburger meat to feed this bird per the directions of the vet. A perch was put in one of the giant wire crates for the falcon. It was with this bird that I became familiar with "the look of eagles". This is the not the fierce look that one can detect on birds of prey as they swoop down looking for a meal but the "other" expression which is a very far away look of great majesty, & calm. The head is held a certain way, the majestic look depicts a total centered self, authority & great dignity. It is impossible to accurately describe the "look" , I can only say it is almost spiritual, not of this world. I was in awe upon witnessing this expression of the wounded falcon. I have seen that "look" on great Arabs, Thoroughbreds and a few great dogs. We were unable to save him as these independent birds are very difficult for amateurs such as we were. Everyone cried when he died, he sat on his perch holding on with great determination until he literally fell dead into the bottom of the crate. I can still picture that "look" in my minds eye and believe that is what our founders meant to convey when they spoke of the "look of eagles" on the German Shepherd Dog. As wealthy men & women of the past I can only guess that hunting was part of their lives and they witnessed that "look" in the fields or in the sport and art of falconry. I dislike that cliche applying to the GSD as I have never seen an eagle that did not look mean, menacing, and just down right evil. Not what I want in a dog. Now I realize that is not what was meant by that cliche in our standard, but reality. It flew over the hood of my car as I was driving down the highway! Scared both of us pretty bad. The "OH SH%^!" look it gave us was not something I want to see on any of my dogs' faces.
