We were at an all-breed show years ago and the judge came to ring side and told
me sternly – “No double handling.”
A few minutes later she again came ringside and with an even sterner voice
said, “If you do not stop double handling I will move your dog back.”
Finally, exasperated, she moved the lovely dog in front to the back of the
line, while glaring at me and gave the point to the dog behind him – my dog! I
was not double handling but the dog seemed to think I was his long-lost master
and alerted to every movement I made.
After the show, I explained it to the judge who was rather embarrassed. The dog
she penalized came running out of the ring and was all over me. We saw him
several times after that and it was always the same response. I liked him too
but, alas, he was not mine.

Once, at a show in Tucson, I was wearing a bright red blouse and somebody
else’s GSD continually alerted to me. The owner was hiding and as soon as I
figured it out, I hid from somebody else’s dog :)

At our GSD classes we always joke that German Shepherds are racists or
elitists. They always become very
threatening when someone brings another breed to the classes.......especially
those that never go to All Breeds.
They think anything that is not a GSD is just wrong! <G>
Also....if you are a Breeder that occasionally or often has black GSD's....you
will notice that many of the dogs at
a show will alert to and threaten your black.....simply because they likely
never see them in their world or kennel.
Because we do get blacks in our lines and have kept a couple....our dogs always
alert to a black GSD thinking
SURELY it must be 'Aunt Bo' or 'Uncle Cash'............<G>
To me...obviously the animals 'see' each other according to 'looks' more than
we think they do.
In other words...if I always wore a plaid shirt or jacket.....the dogs would
soon become 'in tune' to plaid........<G>

When I worked in the child abuse unit of the Santa Clara County Probation
Department many times I had to visit and interview children at the county
children's shelter ( a place where children of abuse were temporarily housed)
... I'd always see this one black squirrel and I never ever saw any of the
non-black squirrels inter-acting with him/her! This is NOT fake news...
Lister Shirley Briggs O'Brien also worked in the child abuse unit of Social
Services! Shirley, did you ever see that black squirrel! FB

Want to know something interesting? Mary Lou my herding trainer has used a
couple of rams this last breeding season, instead of just 1 ram. So the lambs
have been either a variety of spotted or mottled white and brown lambs or solid
white lambs. All the lambs are near the same age, about 2 months difference
between the oldest & the youngest.
But get this – when they are all (weaned lambs, ewes and wethers) out on the
big field grazing during the day, they just naturally separate themselves into
a ‘white’ flock and a ‘spotted/colored’ flock! When the whole flock is brought
back to the barn, they all intermingle without any problems or fighting or
anything. Kathy McQuire
