I just love looking at the old Reviews. (These I'm referring to were from the 1980's). There is a world of information in them for the student who wants to learn about our breed. It is definitely a "picture book" story of where our breed has come from, where it's been and what direction it's going in. The articles that were written then are still relevant for today. I look at the many pictures not just of the dogs, but of the people who were in the breed and who are no longer with us which saddens me, and also of those of us who are still kicking around after all these years. The president of the GSDCA (back then) is still with us on this List. Every picture you see of her, she had a broad, happy sunny smile on her face and always looked classy.....Mrs. Helen Miller Fisher. The always attractive tall blond judge who had just as many assignments back then as she still does today......Mrs. Joan Fox. And how about that Evan? I've only known him as the guy with the white hair and mustache, and looking back then, his hair and mustache was so dark and he was still showing his own dogs. All three of the Dancosses' were showing back then. Henry was just about on every other page, and the young Leslie was giving her father a run for his money. And how about when she and Jimmy Moses judged a futurity together? The kid and the master. Loved seeing all the candid shots that someone took at the National. There was about 5 pages of them. I knew I recognized but could not place this young dark haired woman sitting there in deep thought and contemplation. Who was she? No it couldn't be I thought to myself. So I went and got my magnifying glass (hey the pictures were small), and lo and behold.......it was me! Did I really wear my hair like that? Great article written by Nancy Harper about hotels I believe, someone wrote a letter to the editor (I used to love reading the letters to the editor) about the great Manhattan. It reminded me of what the List has been talking about all week long......the Westminster show. And yes he won from the Herding group as this writer said in her letter. The illustrations were so educational. Someone drew an illustration about the different classes and how you went from class winner all the way to Best in show. Constant education is a very important tool to keep the new people interested and keep them learning and for all the rest who need some reminders......because we're never too old to learn. For all those who have said that the Review is not so highly thought of anymore because of the internet. I must disagree. All the dogs are brought together in one publication and all the wonderful educational articles that I can read and go back to time and again are there. I can pick up these old magazines time and time again. I can't do that on the internet. This is my hope for the new direction the Review will go in. Educate the students of the breed again. Back then we weren't worried about the Paws or Peta people or the senators trying to pass legislation that would stop us from breeding or owning our pure breed dogs. Life and dog shows were fun and carefree. The only thing we worried about is whether the judge would appreciate the dog we were showing under them. "What have they done to our song mom"? So many of the greats are now gone. The times.....they are a changing. We may not be as young, or as thin (except for Nancy Vaught - I hate her, LOL!), or as energetic and the hair is now (and note I didn't say turning....it already is) gray, the hair is thinning, the arthritis has set in and some of us are moving a little or a lot slower than we did back then..............but the one thing that hasn't changed and no amount of time will change that.........we all loved the breed then and still do. It's what has kept some people in the breed for over 40 years and it's what brought me back into the breed (damn fool that I am) after all these years. I was going to say it's what keeps us young.........but that would depend upon what part of the day I'm writing this......before I'm bending over to clean the runs or groom the dog or lifting 20 lb. 8 week old puppies and the back just doesn't want to cooperate, or while I'm sipping a hot chocolate still in my flannel pajamas!
