I am all for changing the Standard, if and only if the change would serve to
improve the Breed in some way.
I've heard/read the argument that removing the white DQ will result in an
expanded gene pool. Really? In what way? If the white DQ is removed, how
many breeders of standard colored dogs will decide to breed whites or
incorporate white dogs into their breeding programs? There may be breeders out
there that will do this, but I believe they are in the minority. Are there any
Board members who will incorporate whites into their breeding programs? Just
asking...
Is the removal of the white DQ really going to generate more money for the Club
and the AKC? If I'm going compete in this "sport," I want to WIN! Why would
one show a dog with a SERIOUS fault knowing that the chance of winning is slim
to none? Why would anyone intentionally spend money to go to a dog show to
lose? Showing GSDs is expensive. If I owned a white and couldn't win in the
AKC conformation ring, I would find other things to do with my dog.
Also, why are there a number of AKC breeds who have DQs based upon the total
amount of white allowed on the dog? I.E. breeds like the Boxer or Vizsla.

It makes me very sad to see German Shepherd people fighting over their
standard...
Standards are guidelines for what is considered the optimum/perfect specimen of
a breed. They weren't put together overnight - standards take years and lots of
fighting to get to where they are appropriate and people can agree on them for
the most part.
I happen to like standards - I like having a goal - some is subjective, but
that's how it should be - the spice of life. It would be boring if all GSDs or
all Dalmatians looked a like. Our breeds would be come vanilla... And it takes
some of every type within a pedigree to get the right look. You can have too
many extreme, you can have too many moderate - but with both and the pedigrees,
you should be able to come to a dog who is appropriate for the standard.
What I fail to understand is why should colors be adjusted and why should coats
be adjusted to be included as either faults or acceptable? You might as well
let faults of structure, floppy ears and faded pigment be in the ring too
because you are essentially throwing out what someone is considering the
"ideal" definition of a GSD...
Why have a standard if every imperfection is going to be in the ring?
Frankly there are other ways to get people involved and trust me, it isn't just
this breed - it stretches across all breeds.
And no offense, part of the lack of appeal on GSDs is the fact that it takes a
handler to finish one and that's what all the outsiders believe.
Leave the standard alone and find some other way to get people included in the
club..
BTW: If you guys open it up for faults and DQ's to be included, that sets a
very bad, bad precedent across purebred dogs... And that really makes me sick
to think about...
