You raise a point I didn't consider.....degrees of correct temperament and
personal preference.
An old generation GSD breeder/judge showed me how to properly conduct a
temperament test once. He said don't look the dog in the eye, approach
confidently, touch the dog on the head and walk away......no leaning over, no
pounding the dog on it's side, no messing with the leash or making kissy face
with it (he didn't say kissy face :o))......respect the dog.
Lets face it, a tough dog that might intimate people is going to be labeled
negatively where as the dog that is all about feeling the love and swooning
over every stranger they meet is going to be considered a dog with an
outstanding temperament. Society, legislation, fear of lawsuits and
conformist attitudes .....are driving that train......and in ten years......who
knows what most people will consider a "correct" temperament.
All I know is if we start putting bows in our dogs....I'm out........though
FYI......according to Ed Biven....Red it the preferred color of choice for
black and tans (at least as it pertains to yorkies). <g>

As much as I respect Dave, and as much as I often agree with him, I do not
agree with everything he says. He prefers a tougher dog, that is what he
likes. He does not say that is what the standard requires. I remember in the
past dogs that you approached with some trepidation. As a judge, that is
not what I like, nor as an owner or breeder.
I loved Patriot, who didn't care less about anyone but his owners. He stood
in the ring and ignored everyone. That is what the standard calls for,
aloof, but not what I like in my dogs.
I judged Rollins and in my opinion, he was tough enough for me when he was
in my ring. As a matter of fact, I didn't try to push him, not because I
thought he would bite, but he was as sound as I wanted.
I like a bit of a softer dog, that I can live with. Not one afraid, but not
one too tough. But, my opinion is just mine, and no better than yours, or
anyone elses. The standard tells us what the temperament should be, and at
least in judging a dog, that is what it should be.
And, sissys will bite too. They can't bitch slap you, and biting is all
there is.
