How wonderful is that! Hats off to those who give their time, money and
efforts for our service men and women. Just one less thing to worry about
for our military.

This month, I'd like to highlight the work of Paw Prints/Canine Corps,

http://www.pawprintsdogsanctuary.org, in Landisburg, Perry County. Paw

Prints/Canine Corps is making a real difference in the lives of deployed

Pennsylvania military personnel. The organization is a nonprofit that

houses, free of charge, the pet dogs of Pennsylvania military personnel

deployed overseas. They provide care for these "military buddies" as a

gift to Pennsylvania's servicemembers.

The Paw Prints/Canine Corps program began three years ago when Mr. Kevin

McCartin, a former marine, and Mrs. Laurie Lyon opened their Perry County

facility. The facility, a large Amish-built barn, is divided into 200- to

400-square-foot rooms the pets share with compatible "roommates." The

rooms are designed to remind the guests of home with couches, blankets and

chew toys. Each room opens to an outdoor fenced-in play area, and the

pets are allowed to roam freely between the indoors and out. The barn's

heated floors keep the guests warm during the winter months. Outside many

of the rooms, small gold plaques donated by the local VFW hang to honor

late servicemembers from the area. The grounds of the facility include

five acres of walking trails where volunteers regularly exercise the

guests. Currently, Paw Prints/Canine Corps is home to 19 "military

buddies" of Pennsylvanians serving in various branches of our armed

forces.
