I have been reading about the controversy of allowing dogs with DQs to receive the GSDCA Performance Victor/Victrix awards (herding, obedience, agility) at the national. I believe that if the AKC says that a dog is a German Shepherd, we have accepted their entry AS a GSD, and that dog has performed in its respective sport better than any of the other entered dogs, then that dog deserves the award. In the past few years there have been dogs that have earned because they WERE the best dogs at the trial, the title Agility Victor/Victrix whose parentage is unknown (ILP) and doubtful even though they did NOT have a DQ. Several times over the years, the Highest Scoring Rescue dog has also been the Agility Victor/Victrix. The AKC has said that they recognize these dogs as GSDs. If someone has a problem with what the AKC is allowing to be ILP'd as a GSD, that is a different issue and should be addressed, but not at our national after we have accepted their entry as a GSD. We may have our doubts (even with no disqualifying faults according to our standard), but if the AKC recognizes them as a GSD and we've accepted their entry into our trial as a GSD (it is a GSD ONLY trial), then they should be eligible for Agility or Obedience or Herding Victor/Victrix. We are judging on PERFORMANCE, not conformation. Personally, I like to see conformationally correct dogs doing performance, too, and that is what *I* choose to compete with, but conformation is not being judged in performance events, just like agility/obedience/herding ability is not being judged in the conformation ring. I have a breed champion who broke his tail last summer. Luckily, we didn't have to amputate, but if he HAD had to have it amputated, under the "No DQ" rules, he would not be eligible for a top award in a performance sport at the national...because he would now have a DQ fault...even though he was a breed champion. How is THAT right? Having or not having a tail doesn't change his ability to herd or the fact that he is a finished CH with known parentage. I have a friend that has a BC that looks EXACTLY like some of the Panda GSDs on that infamous website. He happens to be a registered BC, but if she could get him ILP'd as a GSD, he would have no DQ according to our standard. Under the "No DQ" rule, he would be eligible to be a performance victor. But yet a GSD with a DQ but KNOWN parentage is not? The "No DQ" rule was really put in place to address white GSDs. White GSDs cannot currently be shown in conformation in AKC events and they know that. If they enter, they will be excused. However, they ARE eligible for performance events. As long as we accept their entry, they should be eligible for the performance awards. If the best agility or herding or obedience dog is white, and we've accepted their entry, then they deserve the trophy. If someone doesn't like being beaten by a dog with a DQ color, then be a good sport, congratulate the person/dog that did better than you and go home and train harder or get a better dog.
