Karen,
Linkedin is also a place to communicate with like minded people and groups.
Yes it has group listings as well. The GSDCA IS a business, an non -
profit corp.
Flickr is a place to post photos , videos and comments. Period. We welcome
"official" photos of wins, and events as well as photos videos of families
and their
GSDS. You can't do that on most "Lists" or chats ...we wanted to give
people
every opportunity to share in the love of the breed.

What you may be missing is that the intent of, actually using 21 Century
communication and social media is to generate interest in, and help drive
traffic to,
our clubs, our breed. WE MUST REACH OUT TO YOUNGER PEOPLE AND NEW PEOPLE.

Participation is down on the list, yes...but the list is a CLOSED group,
and
it is generally the same people posting about , mostly the same topics to
one degree or another. It is a valuable asset, but it is not visible by
anyone other
that it's own members...so it
does not particularly target pet owners etc. In it's own statement it says
right up front
"To further and to promote the AKC/CKC/GSDCA/GSDCC style of conformation
showing and breeding of German Shepherd Dogs"

While this is good, it is still a PRIVATE group that isn't reaching out to
the worldwide community of
GSD lovers. It isn't designed to engage NEW people, pet owners and the
THOUSANDS in the fancy
who have no idea what "the list " is or for that matter , have never heard
of the GSDCA. The GSDCA
has a reputation of being a closed, "private" and cloistered group. This is
even the perception by
many of our own members! This has to change for us as a club to survive.

Our breed is the 2nd most registered breed in the AKC. Yet our membership
is dwindling to the
point that we may be extinct as a club, in several years. Our members are
not renewing (why?)
or sadly passing away...we do not have enough Jrs and new people coming in
to stop the
hemorrhage of lost memberships. So we have to do something to ENCOURAGE
participation in the breed, especially in this country.

The Facebook page was very ,very well received. So were all the new PR
ideas.
If we keep doing the same ole, same ole, then the results will not change.
It is time to use every tool we have to generate interest.
We need to put an INCLUSIVE, FRIENDLY and WELCOMING face on
the GSDCA. This, particularly so with the upcoming Centennial and World
Trials.

The status quo simply isn't working anymore. It hasn't for a long time.
 Look at
the exhibitors at the next specialty..how many are under 50? under 30?
 How many
Jrs? We as a group, are not doing a good job of replacing lost members ,
much less growing the
membership.
New times, new challenges call for new ideas! :-)
But participation in any of these new and exciting things is purely
voluntary.
We welcome EVERYONE, but we won't force you.
Very warmest regards,
Kathy Tank
