that is absolutely UNTRUE, evan. we had more litters nominated last year
than the year before and, this year, we are up approximately 18% in
nominations from this same time last year. and ... before anyone asks ... the
percentage of FREE nominations has decreased.

This entire issue may be bigger than a board decision or the fees charged.
Measuring simply by the drop in litters nominated may be a little short
sighted.
September AKC Chairmanâ??s Report contains a sobering assessment of the AKCâ??
s
registration situation. Registrations numbers have dropped 53 percent
since
1992, from 1.5 million to a projected 725,000 this year.
AKC wants to blame a large part of this on "paper only" registrations.
While
that is having an effect, there are other factors.
1. The competition of other registries, - paper only registrations. (As
above)
2. The economy - we have not bred a litter simple because we cannot afford
to right now. We never make money on the process.
3. The Animal Rights forces have increasingly sponsored laws that make it
virtually impossible to breed. Example: Las Vegas, NV & Clark County, in
which it is located: All dogs must be neutered or spayed by three months
of
age unless they are 'certified' as a show dog. You see the problem. They
cannot be a show dog until they are six months old and having brood stock
who do not show is thus illegal also... Obey these stupid laws and the
entire world is pet free in one generation.
4. Lower membership might equal fewer litters from members - ya think.
5. Etc.
So, there are many reasons that litter nominations are down. Thankfully,
trends do not always continue at the same rate indefinitely - I think it
is
called the bell curve phenomena or something like that. But if they do,
our
sport is doomed along with pet ownership by the general public. We have
some
major issue ahead of our sport, and I only hope that we can find a way to
stop the trend or at least slow it until my days are over and my interest
in
GSD is fulfilled at the bridge.
All that to say, Evan has a valid point. Free nominations may have
increased
as a percentage of the available litters to be nominated.
