To add to me not truly trusting these test results now is I found out that
Gehren's Sire has a Littermate brother who OFA'd as Normal. So I may be
wrong but I would think that Gehren's Sire should have been at the most a
carrier. So with the Dam being Clear and the Sire at most being a carrier
how would they produce an At Risk Offspring. Like I said I may be wrong but
just does not add up per what they say per all the results.

DM is a very agonizing disease for both the owner and the dog, but the
problem is we have over 90 genetic diseases!! Ask any owner of an EPI, IBD,
Mega or Cancer dog about pain and agony, long term suffering. The odds of
finding any completely CLEAN GSD are probably as high as one of us hitting
the lottery. Many of these diseases are a combination of genetics (what will
we lose in the breed by removing that gene).
These are not simple solutions, for every action there will be a reaction!!
According to the latest genome research we have found the markers for (1)
pituitary dwarfism, (2) DM (missouri test confirmed); (3) Congenital
Megaesophagus. I understand that there is a marker for IBD (still in
testing).
The responsibility of the breeders will be that of playing "GOD". It has
taken 100 years to really screw up the health of the GSD, and we still do
not know the effects of diet, vaccinations and environment. The latest
research has shown that in humans a major player in allergies and asthma is
that the civilized world has cleaned up the environment TOO MUCH. ie. HOOK
WORMS.
So many of the characteristics of the German Shepherd are unique; be
careful of what you breed out, you may endup with a Poodle!!

I have to agree with both Teona and Doc. My Obie went downhill fast
from DM in 1990. If you've experienced the body deteriorating, your
special dog not understanding, because, you see, the mind is still
keen--if you have experienced THAT--you would only breed clear to clear.
