Responsible Pet Owners Alliance is an animal welfare organization, not "animal rights" and, yes, there is a difference. Permission granted to crosspost. April 18, 2007 Message below from Jeff Shaver for immediate action! For your elected state officials, go to: www.capitol.state.tx.us and there's a box to use for a search on the home page. You'll receive all contact information. ***************************************** Jeff writes: I am still waiting for confirmation but have it on good information that the House sponsors especially Gattis' office are up to some tricks in Austin. The animal cruelty bill (HB2328) is being debated on the House floor today and is expected to have a vote. Those sponsors do not believe their cruelty bill will pass as it is opposed by farmers, ranchers, hunters, etc. However, there is an effort to amend that bill and add Gattis' 1355, which we all are opposed to it in it's current form. They hope by doing this, they will gain support for the cruelty bill as well since there is a great deal of momentum behind Gattis' bill in the House. If this were to be amended and passed on the House floor, there is a possibility it could go to the Senate floor for a vote without the Senate Criminal Justice Committee even having to make a decision and vote on it. Nothing surprises me that comes out of Austin. Not only do most of those who support this bill not know what it actually does now there are people signing on to support it who have most likely not even read the bill. Action is needed immediately. Direct calls to the Austin offices of your Representatives, not Senators, should be made today. Facsimile correspondence should be sent as well re-urging opposition to House Bill 1355 which you have "heard" is going to be added to the cruelty bill which is House Bill 2328 on the House floor today. This is a bad law which will have no positive effect on stopping animals from roaming loose or have any preventative measure. Add whatever else you would like to your letter but we should get responses at as soon as possible. Representative Gattis' office has been very evasive and refused to answer questions and have played "dumb" about what may be going on with this in the House but did indicate the House members are on the floor currently debating the cruelty bill. We need immediate responses to all Representatives at this moment. Right now! Please!
