A friend of mine called me yesterday very upset. Her repro vet said her 6 or 7
year old stud dog's left testicle is enlarged and firmer than the right one.
He feels the dog has testicular cancer and should be neutered as soon as
possible. She had several questions I told her I'd ask the list.
1. Is there any type of a test/biopsy that can definitely determine if the
testicle is cancerous? If so, what type of test is it? The vet says there are no
such tests. Her husband told her there are blood tests and other tests for
humans that can determine if it is cancer and at what stage - anything like this
for dogs?
2. Can the vet remove only one testicle and save the other one or would that be
dangerous with this type of cancer?
3. There is one very important breeding she wants to do if at all possible
before the dog has to be neutered. The bitch in question should come into heat
in January. Would it be possible, or even advisable, to bring the bitch into
heat by medications about 3 or 4 weeks early to do the breeding? She's heard
that this may not be safe - would it have any adverse affects on the bitch in
the future?
4. She's thinking of freezing some of his semen. About how expensive is
this to do?
