[ SHOWGSD-L ] Temperament opinions

I am sitting for a German Shepherd that is really insecure. I'm wondering
though if maybe he can't see very well and that's why he "sometimes" lashes
out at me when I try to get him out of his cage, and sometimes he's just
fine.
I'm wondering if there may be an underlying cause. It's like one minute he's
fine and the next minute he's snarling.
He doesn't like you to touch his head either.

Has anyone had an experience like this? This is not an acceptable
temperament in my opinion, and if he were my dog I would have put him down.
He's a liability. But I'd like to understand why he behaves this way. He's
only 3 years old and he has a very nice popular pedigree. :)
