When I was training Police Dogs in the 70s and 80s, I used a 22 cal blank for many years. I stopped using the 22 and went to a shot gun or 357 cal for the test after one of my trainees that had passed the test with the 22 and was in the field with his Police Officer Partner showed up noise shy. This dog was retested and retired as noise sensitive. In the Von Stephanitz book the Captain refers to a dog that would stand during cannon fire but would run from thunder. Apparently a different type of noise created a different response. Harlowe Jahelka, K9 Sgt retired L.A.
