I agree with you <G>. Some of our dogs still exhibit what I most admire
about the breed. For me, it's all about living with them:)

Re grooming if the game is played to win, I'll still drag the table &
generator to shows lol. Lately I've been getting 2x as much coat on my
youngsters as they need and something has to be done w/ all of that hair!!!!
I
keep consoling myself with the thought that even when they will technically
be out of coat they won't be "naked"!

I can't say I've seen judges put a dog up BECAUSE of a good grooming job,
but I've wondered if particularly bad presentations haven't cost a dog when
it was close...guess I'll never know but I don't want one of mine to be
poorly presented <G>.

Kathy, your point on socialization is well taken------IF you believe that
GSs
are meant to live in pens. I don't mean to be polarian here, but the
exhibition
of GSs has changed dramatically, and now does not really reflect the true
definition of the breed. We should not need the bells and whistles: people
used to show their own dogs ( no double handling there LOL). Now in order
to win one must have the big handler (don't misunderstand, I like and
admire
most of them) to make the dog race mindlessly around the ring, a matter of
the fastest dog wins. Also, why should they have to be wet down (sometimes
in 29 degree cold) and blown out at a specialty. Have you ever seen a judge
at a specialty show make his decision on a nice fluffy coat? Gesh ! No,
this
noble breed cannot be compared to a horse, needing shots or pills to keep
him running in spite of pain. Think back on what you originally so admired
in
the GSD. Are our show dogs really showing these attributes ?

Well, that's you and if everyone in the middle of the ring did the same we

wouldn't need a test. How many times have you seen poor temperament
overlooked/rewarded?

As for socialization, I still think it's important. I agree, it's not
going to change character, but I don't think it's quite fair for a dog to
be
pulled out of a pen and thrown into van, wet down, blown out, handed off
to a
stranger, subject to bells, whistles etc. and be expected to show their
true colors. It might work, it might not. Why leave anything to
chance?
Do you thing the horses that will start in the derby this weekend have
been
over to the paddock on non-race day a few times? Do you think they've
practiced in the gate??? (Rhetorical question; horses need a "gate card"
before
being eligible to be entered.)

I prefer to take a baby to a handful of classes, a handful of children's
sporting practices etc. and make everything fun. And I've got house dogs
lol. But not all dogs live underfoot, I get that.

Temperament in our breed is most important, but the observer at a F/M
islaughable. A knowledgeable and honest judge will determine a dog's
temperamentimmediately. I am so adamant about temperament in the GSD, that
I do
noteven feel that socialization is a viable option. A dog that has to be
socialized does not have the mind or instinctive character of a GSD.
Character is
forever;training can fail.
